Nick Malcolm Quartet  -  Thu Jan 17, 2013  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
Trumpeter Nick Malcolm, who divides his time between the London and Bristol scenes, is the latest in a growing array of young players who are blurring the line between composition and improvisation, delivering music that combines tuneful accessibility with a willingness to move in adventurous directions.

The quartet that he brings to the Bridge is a superb vehicle for this type of approach, including in keyboards player Alex Hawkins and bassist Olie Brice two of the musicians who have been at the forefront of this approach (both have played tremendous gigs for Jazz North East in the past few years). Drummer Mark Whitlam is a less familiar figure, largely because he concentrates on playing around his Bristol base rather than touring, but his contribution to the quartet's debut CD 'Glimmers' makes it clear that he is entirely at home with this music, being bright, inventive and responsive throughout.

The release of that CD, and a short tour to promote it, was a major breakthrough for Nick Malcolm, prompting critic Ian Mann to write that "the quietly adventurous music of 'Glimmers' deserves to establish Malcolm as a significant presence on the UK jazz scene". We missed out on that tour, but we received such glowing reports from other promoters that, when Nick subsequently approached us for a gig, we had absolutely no hesitation is saying "Yes".

This is our first gig of 2013, and we're certain it will get the new year off to a flying start.
