Frode Gjerstad | Back
Saxophones, Clarinet

Reeds player Frøde Gjerstad played much of his early free jazz in the 1980s with British drummer John Stevens and other international musicians because there was no tradition of free improvisation in his native Norway. He became, and remains, a key player on the Norwegian scene as it developed, but has also maintained his links with leading figures on both sides of the Atlantic, playing in groups with such stars as William Parker, Hamid Drake and Peter Brotzmann. In 1997 he was voted 'Norwegian Jazz Musician of the Year', a rare accolade for somebody working uncompromisingly on the free scene.
