John Edwards | Back
Double Bass

John Edwards - not to be confused with John 'Rhino' Edwards, bass player with Status Quo! - took up the double bass around 1987, and by 1990 was touring with three bands working in a loosely art-rock / punk jazz area, most notably B-Shops For The Poor (which later metamorphosed into the Remote Viewers). At the same time he was an increasing presence on the London improvised music scene, playing with just about everybody, including performing and recording with Evan Parker from 1996 onwards.
In recent years John has made numerous appearances in Newcastle, including memorable gigs where he and drummer Mark Sanders have backed Peter Brtzmann, trombonist Johannes Bauer, and the late Elton Dean. He has also been an almost automatic choice for Jazz North East's 'On the Outside' Festivals, and on every occasion his combination of enormous physical energy with harmonic and metrical adventurousness has left audiences open mouthed with astonishment and eager for more.
