Juliet Kelly | Back

Brought up in London, Juliet Kelly didn't take to jazz singing until part way through an economics degree at university, and even then she took time to develop her talent. Rather than pitch straight in to the world of standards, she waited until she had evolved her own sound and her skills as a writer, so her debut album 'Aphrodite's Child' featured a high proportion of original material.

It's a path she has continued to tread, making her one of the most distinctive vocalists on the UK jazz scene, with her voice described in 'AllAboutJazz' as "a warm, rich, lush natural instrument". Her songwriting has become increasingly ambitious and sophisticated, reaching a new high in 2014 when she unveiled her 'Spellbound Stories' project, featuring lyrics inspired by some of her favourite books, from 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' through to George Eliot's 'Middlemarch'. With Juliet Kelly you get music to delight the ears, but also to engage the brain.
