Jamil Sheriff | Back

Pianist Jamil Sheriff has been one of the busiest figures on the UK jazz scene since graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1997 (in the process winning just about every prize available, including that for highest degree result). Perhaps the only reason he hasn't received more widespread recognition is because he has pursued a career in jazz education alongside his paying activities, and is now Principle Lecturer on the Leeds jazz programme.

For the first six years after graduating he worked mainly as a sidesman in other people's bands, but in 2003 he formed his own octet, whose debut CD 'Daydreams' was widely acclaimed. But the economics of touring an 8-piece band mean that live performances have been relatively infrequent, and he has more recently concentrated on his trio, selected by Jazz North as one of its showcase 'Northern Line' programme.

In adition to leading his own bands, Jamil continues to be much in demand to fill the piano stool with other groups, from big bands such as the James Hamilton Jazz Orchestra through to classic jazz groupings like Matt Anderson's Wild Flower Quintet.
