Mary Halvorson | Back

Originally from Boston but now based in New York, guitarist Mary Halvorson first came to attention around 2003 as a member of Anthony Braxton's groups, and has continued to work regularly with other Braxton alumni like trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum and violinist Jessica Pavone. But she has also developed an individual approach that has led to her being described as "the most impressive guitarist of her generation".

Her creative abilities and openness to experimentation has led to her working regularly with such notables as Joe Morris, Tony Malaby, Myra Melford and Marc Ribot, as well as leading her own trio with bassist John Hebert and drummer Ches Smith. She has also forged close links with Ingrid Laubrock, working with her in the saxophonist's own quintet Anti-House and the Tom Rainey Trio.
