Tom Rainey | Back

California-born drummer Tom Rainey moved to New York in 1979, and in the subsequent three decades worked with just about every significant player on the downtown scene, from the relatively straightahead to the uncomprisingly experimental. Probably his best know partnership (and one of the longest lasting) has been with saxophonist Tim Berne, but there have been equally creative links with an A-Z of big hitters from John Abercrombie and Ray Anderson to Kenny Werner and Denny Zeitlin.

Extraordinarily it was not until 2010 that he first issued an album under his own name, leading a trio with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and guitarist Mary Halvorson. This has now become his most significant creative outlet, although he continues to be the 'go-to' drummer for any New York musician looking for what one critic called "the smell of invention".
