Tori Freestone | Back

Tori Freestone began playing and singing in folk clubs at the age of 7, but shifted her allegiance to jazz and the saxophone in her teens, going on to study at Leeds College of Music and the Guildhall School in London.

She is probably best known for her work with the quartet Compassionate Dictatorship, which she has co-led with fellow Leeds graduate Jez Franks since 2006, but she also leads her own trio with bassist Dave Mannington and drummer Tim Giles, and works regularly with other leading members of the London scene such as Ivo Neame and Rory Simmons. She also continues to perform in other styles ranging from Cuban music to country-tinged rock, occasionally returning to her folk roots on violin.

Tori Freestone has a warm and open tone, her playing is melodic and innovative. Exploring the full range of the saxophone, Freestone effortlessly switches between fiery and haunting melodies.
