Trevor Watts | Back
Alto & Soprano Saxophones

Born in 1939, Trevor Watts took up the saxophone at the age of 18, having previously been a cornet player. During RAF service he met drummer John Stevens and trombonist Paul Rutherford, who shared an interest in musical experimentation, and in 1965 they formed the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, one of the key crucibles of free improvisation in the UK.

Watts continues to this day to perform in free music contexts, but he has also worked in rock and blues, and has spent many years investigating links between jazz and African music, especially in differently sized versions of his Moiré Music Ensemble. More recently he has explored the more intimate duo territory with pianist Veryan Weston, a pairing that has won increasing recognition and now undertakes worldwide tours.

Even in the freest situations, Watts has always been a lyrical player, and continues to be one of the most distinctive instrumental voices in UK jazz.
