Shabaka Hutchings | Back

Born in London in 1984, Shabaka Hutchings was raised and educated in Barbados between the ages of six and sixteen, before returning to the UK to pursue his music studies. While living in Birmingham he was introduced to jazz through weekly jam sessions run by Soweto Kinch.

Moving on to study clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music, he rapidly became active on the London scene, initially in various projects of the Tomorrow's Warriors organisation, and then with his own trio Zed-U, merging a whole range of genres including free improvisation, dub, minimalism and others. He also became an integral part of London's free music scene, working with such major figures as Evan Parker, Louis Moholo, and the late Lol Coxhill, as well as visiting luminaries like bassist Charlie Haden.

In 2010 Shabaka was names as a BBC Radio 3 'New Generation Artist', one of very few jazz musicians to have received this accolade.
