Ntshuks Bonga | Back

Born in Johannesburg in 1963, Ntshuks Bonga moved to London with his family in 1970, not returning to his country of birth until after the end of the apartheid era. Although he remains based in the UK, he now also plays regularly in South Africa, particularly with the great percussionist Louis Moholo-Moholo.

Like his major inspirations Dudu Pukwana and Kippie Moeketsi, Ntshuks inclines towards the free end of jazz, but always maintains a foothold in rhythm and melody - the jaunty township influenced music of Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath being another significant point of reference. Regular playing partners include fellow South African emigré Claude Deppa, and such leading figures on the UK inside/outside scene as Alexander Hawkins, Jason Yarde and Corey Mwamba.
