Roland Ramanan | Back

The son of legendary trumpeter 'Shake' Keane, who with Joe Harriott pioneered a distinctive form of free jazz in the 1960s, Roland Ramanan has inherited his father's love of the experimental, but without ever falling under his shadow. In fact his earliest experiences of free music were in 1989 with drummer John Stevens, since when he has been a continuing presence on the London improv scene, extending the sonic possibilities of the trumpet, and exploring the interface between composition and improvisation.

As well as working with such masters as Evan Parker and Peter Brötzmann, he leads the Roland Ramanan Tentet and his own quartet VOLE, and has been a stalwart of the London Improvisers Orchestra since its inception.
