David Carnegie | Back

Born in Barbados to Jamaican parents, David Carnegie started playing piano when he was 7, but really found his musical home when he first sat down at a drum kit at the age of 14. Ten years later he was a well established presence on the Bajan scene, having played before the Prime Minister, the Governor General, and assorted visiting heads of state.

He then took the decision to move the the UK, and for a number of years was a leading figure on the Tyneside jazz scene, working with a range of other musicians and then forming his own quintet 'Extreme Measures', which many regard as the inspiration for a wave of new young jazz groups in the North East. The drive, colour and spontaneity he brought to every performance made him a great favourite with musicians and audiences alike.

David returned to Barbados around the end of 2011, and now divides his time between teaching and performing, working in a range of bands including the acclaimed piano trio 'The Original Unit', with long-time musical associates Stefan Walcott and Neil Newton.
