James Newton | Back
Flute

Born in Los Angeles in 1953, James Newton began his musical career playing a range of instruments, including saxophones and clarinet, but by the mid-'70s he was concentrating exclusively on flute, extending the innovations of Eric Dolphy and Rahsaan Roland Kirk to become perhaps the most technically accomplished jazz flautist ever. But the technique wasn't at the expense of imagination, and he won the flute category of the Downbeat Critics Poll for an extraordinary 23 consecutive years. He played a stunning Corner House gig with drummer Andrew Cyrille a few years ago, demonstrating exactly why he is held in such high esteem.

His jazz playing has long been accompanied by an interest in other traditions of improvised music: his classic solo album Axum drew extensively on African influences, and more recently he has become involved in Indo-Jazz projects, most notably with Larry Coryell's Mumbai Jazz.
